| Background: Computable general
equilibrium (CGE) models allow for a more accurate simulation
of regional economic response to changes in public policies
than traditional models. These models can be used to simulate
the effects of shocks to the regional economy. CGE models provide
valuable tools to policymakers as they debate trade and tax
policy. |
| Progress in 2003/2004: New multi-sector
CGE models of the Washington and Idaho economies were developed.
These models are used for trade and tax policy analysis in the
respective states. Code was also developed to make the updating
of these models easier in the future. In addition, new data
on agricultural exports from Washington were obtained and became
the basis for an Agricultural Economics staff paper examining
the economic impact of agricultural and food exports on the
Washington economy. |
| Next Steps: Continue to fine-tune
the model and assist policymakers and others with implementation
of the model. |
